Something tells me they don’t want a new MR2/S to cannibalize their new darling Supra. Something tells me the sales figures of the MR-S left a bad taste in Yota’s mouth. Considering the first two gens were selling 10s of thousands in the 80s thousands in the early 90s to not having a US market 8k break year for the Spyder.
Perhaps they choose to jump on the mid engine hype from the C8 though.

P erformance is another story...

3rd gen is the ugly red headed step child. You get a very respectable 2,200lbs but with a boring engine. The previous 2 gens at least had a decent engine as a talking point.
OEM the MRS had the best road feel. When you get tired of the engine then swap whatever you like.

See, that was the real issue. I loved my 3rd gen, but it could barely get out of it’s own way. Up in the mountains is where it really shined, but it was so pokey in the straight.
It was a niche car for a niche market. Do you want a Boxter with Miata performance? We have the car for you!

Yup.
It's like toyota heard "we want a Boxster with a miata price" and confused price for performance.

That is what happens when it strikes out.
Strike 1: it looked like a square, derpy, dimpled-interior Playskool version of the Boxster.
Strike 2: it didn’t use Toyota’s best engine from the Celica GT-S, it used the dialed-back engine from the GT and other cars.
Strike 3: after two versions of MR2s that had front and rear storage... MR2 Spyder had NEITHER. You could choose a passenger or cargo, but not both.
It struck out, we tested one, bought Miata instead, and used the trunk often.
Toyota shot themselves in the foot... among other instances of doing that.

IF there is an opportunity for a hybrid sports car, PHEV performance in a mid-engine package... a Hybrid Synergy Drive MR2 might be that... If Toyota can do it right... like Corolla and Rav4, but as a sport coupe with legit real world performance... like an affordable i8.
Not like a 2-door Prius abomination variant.

Correct. NOT a CR-Z.
Basically the opposite, and thus correct way of building what CR-Z was supposed to be.
